This is a quote which I have found very interesting and I would like to share it with you. We may not all believe it but it sure does give food for thought....

"One of the biggest challenges in the world is that everybody tries to do a good job at work but they are going through some antiquated training process that is just not equipping them to be good at what they do. The better way to learn is to look at how the brain works. Some human beings do not do well sitting in a classroom getting crammed with hours of information. They learn if you give them bite-sized chunks of knowledge and repeat them over time".

Hi, just an update on our summer calendar for 2017.

Since we do not close entirely from July to September, we still have to honour holiday entitlements. As such our Colleges will be operating a reduced Admin service from 1 August 2017 until 4 September 2017.

We hope you will all have a fantastic summer and we thank you very much for your kindness, continued support and patience.

  • Are Search Engines Rigged? Part 2DateWed Jun 28, 2017 1:09 pm
Topic by OTC. Forum: OTC's Blog

Since writing my views in March 2017 on whether search engines are rigged, there has been some startling, if not surprising, updates.

The European Commission states that it has been investigating this very fact for the past 7 years and that its findings provide evidence of rigging. Google has been the main source of their investigation as most searches are being done through that medium. The following is an extract from the Report from the EU.

Google Hit With Record-Breaking $2.7B Antitrust Fine From EU

“What Google has done is illegal under EU antitrust rules,” said Vestager. “It denied other companies the chance to compete on the merits and to innovate. And most importantly, it denied European consumers a genuine choice of services and the full benefits of innovation.”

"On the back of the finding that Google is the dominant player in the European search engine market, the EU regulator is further investigating how else the company may have abused its position, specifically in its provision of maps, images and information on local services.
The commission’s decision, following a seven-year probe into Google’s dominance in searches and smartphones, suggests the company may need to fundamentally rethink the way it operates. It is also now liable to face civil actions for damages by any person or business affected by its anti-competitive behaviour.

Google has denied the claims and has indicated it may appeal the ruling."

One has to ask this question as for the past 7 years, there does not seem to be any changes on the first page of some of the so called most popular search engines! Why is that? Are there no new comers?

Not that I am complaining but when one entry is repeated at least 4 times on the same page, one must start questioning how independent and trustworthy are these search engines. Is it really simply following the myriad of instructions laid down by those who run these engines to get a business listed? Is it that some entries are paying to remain on certain pages forever?

It is certainly time for search engines to become more transparent and certainly time for us researchers to do a little bit more work and look beyond the first page.

Saying this now, will probably result in my listing being vanquished

As 2016 comes to an end, many of us will be reflecting on the past year, on our achievements, our shortcomings and maybe how to re-invent ourselves for 2017. Whatever 2016 brought for us, I am sure we are all truly thankful.

Now as we look ahead with renewed vigour, there may be things which we can improve, family ties which can be mended or forging a new career path.

We give thanks for all our many blessings during 2016 and for the gift that we can continue to impart globally. We wish all our students a most wonderful holiday season and thanks again for your continued support throughout 2016.

So Summer 2016 is over and hopefully most, if not all of us, had something to smile about. For me, I was able to have a little summer break during July of this year. During my travels, I was lucky to come across an exhibition made entirely of sand. I shall share some of these extraordinary sand sculptures with you. See how many you can recognise among this little lot by going to our Picture Gallery entitled Sand.

But now the frivolity is over and I must get back to work. See you later.

    Hi,

We are again at this time of year when staff holidays take its toll. In this light, our admin department will be operating much slower than usual from 19 July 2016 to 1 August 2016. As we are not closing totally, you will notice the slow down and we apologise in advance. We wish that you will all have a great summer, return rejuvenated and full of vigor for the opportunities ahead.

    Hi Everybody!

Another year draws to a close and what an interesting year this was!

We thank all our students for their continued support and our pledge to continue our efforts on their behalf continues. We must, however, take a little break so our offices will be winding down from December 14, 2015 until January 6, 2016. We will remain, in a very limited capacity, to deal with administration but our usual quick response will be slower than usual.

We take this opportunity of wishing everyone a very happy holiday and a very happy Christmas to those of us who celebrate this season.

See you again from 6 January 2016.

    Bye for now.

Topic by OTC. Forum: OTC's Blog

Before the pressure of work returns, I will write a few words of encouragement for those of us who need any such encouragement.

It seems that everyone threw caution to the wind and took a well deserved summer holiday this year. After working all the hours to ensure that their companies weathered the severe downturn of the past few years, this would be a very welcome break.

Now its back to work and to thoughts of improving career prospects. I seem to be writing about this ever so often but how true this is at this time of the year. After relaxing for a couple of carefree weeks, it is not hard to imagine that this is the case for many. Some may have endured jobs simply to keep afloat, pay the necessary bills and other living expenses but if truth be known, several will yearn for better and more. Getting a new qualification in law could be the answer. This may not only gain you a promotion but it should also give further job satisfaction. Employers must be secure in the knowledge that their staff is suitably qualified.

From the level of interested candidates so far, it seems that many are in agreement. This is not a hobby, this is a career-changing opportunity!

The Legal Sector continues to add more and more jobs to the jobs market allowing many to get new jobs, get promoted, move on, or simply to get trained up. This is very encouraging and we continue to get more and more candidates studying and qualifying as Legal Secretaries and Paralegals.

Throughout the height of the economic slowdown, many employees experienced increased workloads due to a reduced workforce. The pendulum has now swung to centre with the more positive economic outlook and employers are again increasing their workforce, taking on more staff.

We have seen the number of job offers rising and we welcome this as a very good sign that job prospects have improved. We have had many 'returners' doing refresher courses in order to brush up on past legal experience - a trend which we hope continues.

At this time of the year, many of us are preoccupied with the next holiday vacation spot, while many others are busy contemplating and seeking out new career moves. We may not be able to help you decide on your next summer spot but we will certainly help with your career.

The rise in job opportunities is here to stay, we hope, so get on a course and get your career on the move.

I shall share the following quote sent in by Veronica. It may just be the 'pick me up' needed today...

I wanna share this with you:

"We need to totally fulfil our duty, whatever the sacrifice to bear, whatever the cost, because it is what is the essence of human dignity."
    ― Giovanni Falcone

My afterthought is that we do things not always out of 'duty' but because we wish to.

Overall, a very thought provoking quote - thanks Veronica!

We hope that you all have a fantastic summer. Please use this time to relax, rejuvenate and plan your future strategy regarding career and family life. These are 2 essential aspects for improving wellbeing so start today by improving your own. How we feel about ourselves could reflect how we feel about others. So start feeling good about yourself. Hi Christina

Provided we receive notification of payment on a working day ie Monday to Friday, the course material and access to download the lessons are normally emailed within 24 hours. If notification is received on weekends or public holidays, then the earliest we can email the materials and access will be during the next working day. We do sometimes, work on weekends in order to deal with extra demands but this is not done every weekend.

This is to remind all students, both current and potential, that as a college, we are not operating 24 hours every day. We have hundreds of students submitting assignments, registration forms, queries, sitting exams, receiving diplomas, certificates. Our dedicated administration team copes very well. However, for the odd candidate who expects to receive on-the-spot service or instant attendance, this is not always possible. In terms of registrations and payments, we aim to email all course materials and access details within a few hours, provided we receive payment notification during working hours. If we sometimes fall short, due to the odd hiccup caused by technical glitches, holidays or unexpected staff illnesses, we would expect that patience is observed.

We do appreciate that it can be unnerving not receiving materials and access to the lessons days after payment has been made. Thankfully, this has never been the case with us. All our materials and access are usually emailed within 24 hours, except on weekends, public holidays or for hiccups already mentioned.

We continue to support our hardworking Administration Department and Thank You to the majority who understands and accepts this.

  • January - 31 Days of Mondays?DateFri Jan 24, 2014 12:47 pm
Topic by OTC. Forum: OTC's Blog

It is almost the end of January in the new year and all around us there are news of huge economical improvements with rising employment and rising self confidence. However, for many this is a month which brings pessimism, sadness and can feel like 31 days of Mondays.

This may be due to the departure of Christmas and all it brought, departing family members and friends, having to go back to the drudgery of a job we may not particularly like and no more holidays in the near future. The weather in some parts is also taking its toll with dark cold days and not much sunlight.

Do not despair! The prospect of new job opportunities is indeed great news and with sufficient influential voices calling for increased wages, the future should appear brighter.

We have kept our word throughout all the years of austerity in keeping our fees competitively low, allowing many students to take advantage and forge ahead with their careers. We see that this has reaped rewards. We will continue to offer our services to students around the world and together we will all share in the promised prosperity ahead.

  • UnemploymentDateSun Jan 05, 2014 10:58 am
Topic by OTC. Forum: OTC's Blog

Unemployment has become a world phenomenon particularly for under 25s. Unemployed, not unemployable. No one has mentioned why but I think that the reason is due to the rise and rise of automation and computer technology. The downturn in world trade has seen significant changes in the way businesses operate but vast improvements have taken place since the days of 2008.

Most entry level jobs are now automated. I cannot forget walking into my local supermarket and suddenly all the smiley faces had been replaced by 'self-check outs'. No longer were there any first-time workers finding their feet in the jobs world.

This is likely to become exacerbated as even Amazon is now contemplating delivering parcels with Drones and Rolls Royce is experimenting with Drones cargo delivery. Soon there will be no need for sea captains and crews! Will commercial airlines be flying Drone aeroplanes too??

The workplace has definitely changed and will continue to evolve.

Where does this leave college and even university leavers?

Thank goodness that the legal profession still requires men and women to prepare cases, become advocates and judges and, of course, to advise clients on the various aspects of their legal issues.

As the law continues to expand its need for legal personnel and remains one of the mainstays for professionals, we will continue to offer professional training for those wishing to have a career in law.
